Therapy for the heart, mind, and soul.

Jill Hokanson, LCSW–S

Hi! I’m Jill, an Austin-based therapist and clinical supervisor offering in-person counseling in Austin, and telehealth counseling in Texas and New Jersey. I have over 10 years of experience providing therapy to individuals and groups. But more than that, I believe that the relationship between therapist and client is what matters most for healing.

I specialize in trauma therapy, especially with people for whom their set of traumatic experiences brings up anxiety, avoidance, perfectionism, and people pleasing. I help folks work through family and work transitions, big decisions, parenting young children, and processing difficult adult relationships with their parents and families of origin. I also help people work on their romantic relationships, in individual treatment and couples therapy.

Working from a neurobiology-informed approach, I use memory reconsolidation to help clients experience healing from traumatic memories and learnings, reduce shame, and be able to be more fully present in your body. I weave this technique into talk therapy when useful.  My training background includes psychodynamic, EMDR, interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), and Parts Work (IFS).

I started out as a therapist-in-training at a care facility, and went on to work with students at The University of Texas at Austin Counseling and Mental Health Center and survivors of interpersonal violence the the Voices Against Violence program and a local domestic violence shelter before spending 8 years at Therapy Austin, where I created a counseling internship program for graduate students and provided clinical supervision to emerging counselors. I started Heart in Mind to be able to offer individual counseling, couples counseling, groups, and clinical supervision tailored to the people I am most passionate about working with. I love providing:

  • anxiety therapy

  • therapy for people pleasers

  • therapy for perfectionism

  • couples therapy

  • therapy for moms and birthing persons

  • therapy related to life transitions and decisions

  • therapy to therapists

  • clinical supervision for LMSWs

I am affirming of people of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, faiths, abilities, and sizes. You are welcome in my practice.

If you think we’d work well together, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
